The Xiaozheng series shrinks the instrument to between one and 1.3 metres, cutting weight and bulk while keeping the basic voice of a guzheng. It suits homes with limited space, teachers who travel, and young beginners.
Which size: the one-metre model is the most portable and works for travel and ad-hoc rehearsal; 1.3 metres is closer to a full-size instrument in volume and bass and makes a good main practice instrument at home. For a child under 1.3 metres tall, a one-metre or 1.1-metre body makes it much easier to keep an upright posture and a correct hand shape.
Portable does not mean a toy: a small guzheng still needs humidity control and regular tuning, and because string tension is lower it drifts out of tune more often. Take care not to press on the soundboard when moving it — see moving and shipping a guzheng and choosing a guzheng size.
