Zhi Jian takes a "enough and done well" approach: the dugout of the Zhenpin series for daily practice and small recitals, for players who practise regularly and expect one instrument to last for years.
It keeps the core technology — a single carved soundboard — but spends nothing on elaborate decoration. The budget goes to what actually decides tone and feel: hardwood bridges, string height, nut angle.
The voice does not chase brilliance; it is comfortable to play. String height is moderate so long sessions stay easy, the middle and low registers are solid, the top is clean. Etudes and standard repertoire are both within reach.
Avoid placing it directly above underfloor heating. Short but regular playing sessions keep the top and bridges more stable than occasional long ones.

FAQ: What is the difference between a dugout and a laminated guzheng in the Zhenpin series? A dugout top is carved from a single block of paulownia with the fibres unbroken, giving fuller resonance and longer decay, at the cost of a much longer build. A laminated top is glued from several boards: more consistent and better value. Neither is absolutely better — it depends on your budget and what you want from the tone.
Suitable for: this dugout guzheng is aimed at professional players, serious amateurs and collectors. Zhonghong also supplies conservatories, ensembles and music shops with batch orders, configuring and tuning instruments uniformly. Schools, ensembles or institutions can use the enquiry form to tell us quantities and scenarios, and we will send a written quotation.

A friend plays in a Chinese orchestra, and said it is very fair at this price, it came in a wooden crate packed with thick foam, five days in transit and not a single knock, delivery was two days late, and I was getting anxious. Very happy with it.
A coming-of-age gift for my daughter, and she cried when she opened it, the tuning pins are set just right, neither loose nor stiff. The harmonics ring out clearly, and come out with the lightest touch.
The edges are finished very cleanly, with no rough spots. Worth the price.
I hesitated for a long time, and ordered during a promotion, I took it to a lesson, and my teacher said the tone was good too, it drifted quite often at first, and took three tunings to settle. Very happy with it.
I was playing a practice instrument that cost a few thousand, and moving to this feels like a different instrument, the bridges are smoothed off nicely, and do not catch your hand when you shift position, the colour is a shade darker than the photos, but it feels better made. I'll be back!
Better than I expected, I'll be back.
A friend heard it at my place, and asked where I bought it, the resonance is better than I expected, and it holds up on something like Fighting the Typhoon, at this price, value for money is not the point, it is about the wood and the work, I would recommend it!
Compared with my last one, the difference was obvious straight away. Five stars!
This was the most expensive one in the shop, I hesitated for six months before buying. The low register is full, and Fisherman's Song at Dusk sounds wonderful on it. It shipped the day after I ordered, delivery was faster than I expected. This is one that could be passed down, I would recommend it!
The workmanship really is careful, the edges are rounded off smoothly, it feels very solid overall, and it does not shift even when you play hard!
I read through the reviews before buying, and it was not a mistake. Customer service was very patient, and answered every question one by one, the strings feel a little soft under the fingers, so a child can press them without strain, I plan to keep it for my child. It costs a little more than comparable instruments, but the workmanship really is different.
